Tucked away to the west of lisbon is
an area which attracted
international visitors.Estoril is a conglomerate of four
regions, all with Estoril in their title: Monte Estoril,
São João do Estoril, São Pedro do Estoril and Santo
António do Estoril.
Early in the 20th century
the resort became the playground of the rich and famous
who came here to relax and sunbathe;luxurious hotels
accommodated illustrious visitors which included royalty
and ex-royalty.
The beach and the casino still remain
big attractions. Offering a broad stretch of fine sand,
Estorils Tamariz beach is crowded in summer. The casino
has been renovated internally and offers bars, a
restaurant, a floor show, gaming machines and comfortable
surroundings in which to win or lose a fortune at
roulette, baccarat and the like.
Just inland from Estoril, along the
road to Sintra is the racing track Autodromo do Estoril
where once the F1 GP was held in September. Just beyond
the race track is a shopping centre with a car park for
3000cars.
There is also a pedestrian walkway on
the seaward side at a lower level which is sheltered from
traffic noise making it a pleasure to stroll between these
two adjacent resorts. Starting out from Tamariz beachin
the centre of Estoril, the nest beach to the west is Praia
Monte Estoril here pavement cafés offer a colourful
atmosphere for a light lunch or a quick lunch snack before
reaching Cascais.
